Bad to good by David Waldron
Chilkoot Charlie's hosted their third consecutive comedy show on Saturday featuring Marc Ryan, a stand-up comic from Baton Rouge. Ryan was brought back by popular demand after his performance at Chilkoot's earlier this year.
Saturday's show started with two openers, Scott the Alaskan and Chilkoot Charlie's funny man Mike Lajoie. Scott the Alaskan performed first, and started the show on a very awkward note with drunkenly delivered jokes that were so crass they left the audience in complete silence more often than not. The reception was so silent, Scott tried to make a joke out of it. ìI can hear crickets on that shit,î Scott said.
Mike Lajoie was next, and quickly warmed the crowd up with his natural stage presence and clever material, including a joke about Alaska politicians high on Wasilla meth. By the time Lajoie finished, the crowd was eager for the caliber of comedy they had paid for, and showed it with a rambunctious applause when Marc Ryan took the stage.
Ryan wasted no time in taking complete control of the show, and was busting guts within five minutes of his set. Most of Ryan's material dealt with being high, being drunk, or sexual exploration, and although his jokes were basic, it was his personality that made the show so successful. Ryan's southern charm and casual dialogue with the audience made winning the crowd over a piece of cake. The grateful comic even remained on stage after his set was over just to chat and joke with the crowd for an extra 15 minutes. With the rapport that Ryan has earned in Alaska, it's safe to say he will be back and making us laugh again soon.
